For this new “point of view” Griffiths used the biblical term faith. In this concept of faith, he found the fulfillment of what he and his friends “had been blindly seeking with our theory of imagination”: For us the imagination had been the power to see beyond the phenomenon, to grasp that reality which underlies the appearances of this world. I knew now that this reality was not merely an idea (in the Platonic sense), but a will. 20 In seeking to know that divine presence he experienced in nature, Griffiths was drawn beyond the faculty of the imagination to open through the will to the divine.

Ambivalence toward Western Culture After a reverent exploration of the English countryside, Griffiths began his studies at Oxford in the fall of 1925. His pessimism about the evident decay in the civilization around him grew, a feeling that he saw reflected in T. S. ”14 Griffiths was prompted to pursue socialist and pacifist activities further, as well as to propose a new religion founded on the prophetic examples of the Romantic poets and on the experience of the divine in nature. 15 Thus, Griffiths’s social critique, his philosophy of the mind and its faculties, and his sense of religion were all interrelated even at this early stage of their formation at Oxford.

With their assistance, he began to articulate a philosophy, that is, a rational framework, to support his spiritual quest as well as his critique of Western culture. In their writings he found ideas and principles to confirm and develop further his own expressions, especially concerning the respective roles of reason and imagination. Retrieving the position he held as a college student on these roles and their current imbalance in Western society, he writes: I considered that “thinking” was the disease from which we were all suffering, so that we were incapable of any spontaneous or creative action.
