After two more years of hard work, he finally completed his courses at the Ecole in 1886, at the age of 24. Although the Ecole did not issue a diploma to any of its foreign students at that time, Bernard’s training in architecture was as complete as any French student who had graduated from the program.

A hidden panel in the wall of this bedroom could be opened, revealing a large storage closet. Inside was the huge cement base of the fireplace, in which there was a dark metal door with a padlock.
